10: Other Sights

  • Brügge / Bruges, Belgium: well preserved Medieval city. Some say Brügge is the best, others say Krakow is the best, I say, see both.
  • Krakow, Poland: well preserved Medieval city
  • Sergijev, ex. Zagorsk, Russia: monastery, 15th century
  • Moscow Metro: stations of the inner ring decorated with marble, ca 1950, photo
  • Sian / Xian, China: huge square shaped city wall with moat
  • Rothenburg ob der Tauber: Beatiful preserved medieval city. It was however heavily bombed during WWII, burning lots of houses which later had to be reconstructed. Photo
  • - Gent, Belgium: well preserved medieval city
  • - Verona, Italy: Medieval city with Roman theatre & the world's oldest still existing library from 5th c AD, photo Roman gate. There used to be an even older library, the famous library in Alexandria, but it was burned.
  • - Lascaux, France: cave, Stone Age paintings ca 40 000 BC (?), discovered in 1940
  • - Bologna, Italy: high towers from 12th century
  • Pisa, Italy: leaning tower & cathedral, 12th century, photo
  • - Kappadokia, Turkey: cave cities
  • - Gonbad-e-Kavus (Gumbad-i-Quabus), Gonbad, Iran: remarkable brick tower built 1006-1007 AD.
  • - Samarkand, Uzbekistan: Timur Lenk's mausoleum, 15th century, etc, photo of Registan Square

  • Panoramas. A special sight are the realistic panoramas that were built during the 19th century before cinema was invented. I have visited panoramas in Moscow (Borodinskaya bitva / Borodino battle), Luzern (Bourbaki), Stockholm (Biological Museum), and Scheveningen (in Holland).
