7: Other Archaeological Sights

Mesopotamia, perhaps origin of our oldest cultures:

  • - Assur, north Iraq: Fragments of the Assyrian capital from ca 2000 BC. Destroyed in 614 BC. Remains of 34 Ishtar temples etc and one preserved zikkurat.
  • - Babylon, central Iraq: Only fragments remain of the Babylonian capital from ca 1700 BC, including the fundament of the famous Tower of Babel. Remains exist of the Hanging gardens, i.e. one of the Seven wonders. Museum is on site. The famous Ishtar Gate can be seen in Berlin.

Elsewhere:

  • - Delphi, Greece: Museum & ruins by the ancient cult centre. The museum hosts famous bronze statue. photo
  • - Mykene, Greece: Lion gate, ca 1400 BC, castle destroyed ca 1190 BC. Excavated by Heinrich Schliemann, who found a gold mask that he believed belonged to king Agamemnon.
  • - Olympia, Greece: Original site of the Olympic games, destroyed in 6th century AD, ruins.
  • - Epidauros Theathre, Greece: Antique's best preserved theatre from 5th c BC, museum.
  • El Djem, Tunisia: Very well preserved coliseum of Thysdrus, only second to the one in Rome.
  • - Jerrash, Jordania: Ruins of parts of the ancient city Gerasa destroyed in 635 AD. photo
  • - Krak des Chevaliers, Lebanon: well preserved crusader castle, 11- 13th century
  • Abu Simbel and Philae, Assuan, south Egypt: temples moved from the Assuan dam, photo
  • - Easter Island: the statues
