Excavations

In 1997 Kungälv municipality decided to support the faultering quaysides of Marstrand harbour by covering the bottom of the harbour with a thick layer of stone. In accordance with Swedish law, "Kulturminneslagen", a preliminary archaeological investigation was made in order to clarify the effects on any cultural layers or shipwrecks in the harbour.

The preliminary investigation and trial excavations showed that a huge cultural layer and the two frigates "Stettin" and "Fredricius/Fredricus" would be destroyed by the harbour works. The rescue plan for the harbour was later changed to avoid disturbing "Stettin", but the cultural layers and "Fredricius" would still be destroyed.
