“In time We shall make them fully understand Our messages in the utmost Horizons and within themselves, so that it will become clear unto them that this (revelation) is indeed the truth. Is it not enough (to know) that thy Sustainer is witness unto everything?” Sura Fusilat (41) verse 53


Guarding The Islamic Tradition

First of all we understand the concept of tradition as referring to an essential element which has been transmitted to mankind from a heavenly source.

Tradition has nothing to do with peoples' usages or customs from old, but is understood as *revealed* tradition, that is truths and principles of divine order revealed or unveiled to mankind from times immemorial.

Therefore what renders Islam "traditional" or an authentic "Tradition" are two essential conditions: the fact that the truth of Islam was revealed from a non-human, divine origin and the fact that this truth was formed the way it was by Prophet Muhammad's MHMD message and pattern (sunnah) and the whole religion of Islam, with its schools of law, its spirituality and saintity.

The heart of Islam is its inner dimension

Everything has an outer form and an inner meaning. The inner dimension of Islam is called Ihsan (perfection) or later Sufism (tasawwuf ) or tazkiya (purification). Although the latter notions may not have been in use at the time of the Prophet MHMD, the former definitely was, and even more so the reality described by those terms. We only have to look at the rigorously authenticated Gibril - hadith on Islam, Iman and Ihsan. Islam's focus on both the inner and the outer is proven by extensive scriptural evidence and countless prophetic narrations.

Tasawwuf therefore is "a knowledge through which one knows the states of the human soul, praiseworthy or blameworthy, how to purify it from the blameworthy and ennoble it by acquiring the praiseworthy [qualities], and to journey and proceed to Allah Most High - [even] fleeing unto Him [by taking a spiritual path - tarîq ].

Its fruits are the heart's development, knowledge of Allah - through direct experience of the Divine, salvation in the next world, triumph through gaining Allah's pleasure, the attainment of eternal happiness, and illuminating and purifying the heart so that noble matters disclose themselves, extraordinary states are revealed, and one perceives what the insight of others is blind to."

Imam Al-Ghazali On Tasawwuf

Imam Al-Ghazali How can it be that the Proof and Reviver of Islam, Hujjatu-l Islam, Imam Al-Ghazali, when he was occupied with the purification of his inward, following the folk of Allah, said: "We have wasted all our lives, oh how worthless my purpose in those days."

Do not think that he made this statement to slight the Shari`ah. He said it in exaltation of it, because he knew the Shari`ah, and he was among the idle ones before he met them. Even though he researched the outward of it, he was shortsighted in its inward. In conclusion he had gathered the form and ignored the knowledge and the Known. When Allah gave him the opening of meeting the Sufis, his knowledge became knowledge of Allah, and before it had been knowledge of the laws of Allah.
