Litanies Associated With Daily Prayers

Q al-salamu `alaykum

What are some of the adhkar that should be done in association with the daily prayers?

A wa `alaykum al-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

What follows, in sha Allah, gives gives the more important litanies [adhkar] and supplications [du`a] associated with the daily prayers.

The column on the right is taken from Matalib `Uli Nuha Fi Sharh Ghayat al-Muntaha. The original text from Ghayat al-Muntaha is intact, while the commentary is abridged.

The column on the left is a rough translation of the portions from Ghayat al-Muntaha and most the commentary; the commentary has been set off with parenthesis. I have not translated the actual litanies because this can be found elsewhere. Shaykh Nuh Keller's The Reliance Of The Traveler and Al-Maqasid contain most – if not all – of the litanies mentioned below.

Text in this color indicate transliterations of the litanies. These are marked in both columns as an aid for those who can read Arabic script but cannot yet read Arabic.

After the [final] taslim, it is a sunna to say:

One should make a supplication, after each daily obligatory prayer, especially after the Morning and Mid-Afternoon Prayers because the angels attend them (and they say “amin” to supplication, and so it is more likely to be accepted) – especially the imam (so that others follow him).

It is not offensive (for the imam) to single himself out in the supplication – according to Imam Ahmad's opinion – as long as it is not a supplication where others say “amin” (like an individual's supplication, during tashahhud and prostration, and the like). Otherwise, he makes it - and if he does not, then he has deceived them – and it is the same for the supplication for qunut.

It is preferable

It is not offensive to raise one's gaze to the sky during the supplication (contrary to [Shaykh `Abd al-Qadir al-Jaylani's] al-Ghunya).

It is offensive

(While supplicating) one should

Conditions for supplication [to be accepted] include: sincerity and avoiding the unlawful (including: food, drink, clothes, and others).

(One should seek out the times when supplications are answered: the last third of the night, at the call to prayer, between the call to prayer and the call to its commencement, after the obligatory daily prayers, on Friday when the imam ascends the minbar until the end of the prayer, and the last hour after Mid-Afternoon Prayer on Friday.)

One should expect the answer without being impatient by saying: “I supplicated You, and You did not answer me!” (One supplicates and waits for the answer. It, too, is an act of worship. Ibn `Uyayna said: “One is not ordered to petition except to be given.”
